The CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) certification proves you can design, configure, manage, and troubleshoot wired and wireless networks. It's the next step after A+ for many IT professionals, and it's required for several DoD positions. Here's how to use practice tests effectively to pass.

The 5 Network+ Domains

Understanding the weight of each domain tells you where to spend your time:

  • Networking Concepts (24%) — OSI model, network topologies, IP addressing, subnetting, ports/protocols, and cloud concepts.
  • Network Implementation (19%) — Routing, switching, wireless configuration, and WAN technologies.
  • Network Operations (16%) — Monitoring, documentation, backup/recovery, and organizational processes.
  • Network Security (19%) — Common attacks, security devices (firewalls, IDS/IPS), hardening techniques, and remote access security.
  • Network Troubleshooting (22%) — The second-largest domain. Methodologies for diagnosing connectivity, performance, and security issues.

Practice Test Strategy

Don't just take tests — analyze them

The biggest mistake candidates make is treating practice tests like a score to beat. Instead, treat every wrong answer as a learning opportunity:

  1. Take the quiz without looking anything up
  2. Review every wrong answer — understand why the correct answer is right
  3. Note the domain each missed question belongs to
  4. Study that domain before retaking a similar quiz
  5. Repeat until you consistently score 85%+ across all domains

Target the high-weight domains first

Networking Concepts and Network Troubleshooting together make up 46% of the exam. If you're short on time, these two domains give you the most points per hour of study.

Mix difficulty levels

Start with easy questions to build a foundation, then work up to hard and advanced. Our quiz generator lets you select difficulty levels so you can progressively challenge yourself.

Simulate exam conditions

At least once a week, take a full-length timed practice test. The real exam gives you 90 minutes for up to 90 questions. Practicing under time pressure prevents exam-day anxiety.

Key Topics to Master

These topics appear frequently on the N10-009:

  • Subnetting — Be able to calculate subnet masks, network addresses, and broadcast addresses quickly. Practice until it's automatic.
  • Port numbers — Know the common ports (22, 25, 53, 80, 443, 3389, etc.) and what services they map to.
  • OSI model — Understand what happens at each layer and which devices/protocols operate at each layer.
  • Wireless standards — 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax frequencies, speeds, and security protocols (WPA2, WPA3).
  • Troubleshooting commands — ping, tracert/traceroute, nslookup, netstat, ipconfig/ifconfig, arp.

Passing Score

  • Passing score: 720 out of 900
  • Questions: Up to 90
  • Time: 90 minutes
  • Prerequisite: None required, but CompTIA recommends A+ and 9-12 months of networking experience

The Network+ has a higher passing threshold than A+, so aim for consistent 85%+ on practice tests before scheduling your exam.
